Junior High Wrestling: Essential Information!
When and Where? Practices are held Monday thru Friday after school from 3 to 5:00 PM at the middle school. There will be some Saturday and Holiday commitments.
What you will need! Every day of practice you will need the following: Wrestling Shoes and Running Shoes, Wrestling Head Gear, and a CLEAN T-shirt and gym shorts (NO SCHOOL GYM Uniforms). Mouth Guards are only required if you wear braces (Must cover top and bottom, your orthodontist general will give you one.)
Flying Feet on Mt Rose Ave is a great place to purchase your gear and you will get a team discount. It is not necessary to buy expensive wrestling shoes, a pair of basic black Asics or Nikes are fine. If purchasing equipment is a financial burden please contact one of the coaches. (I don’t have the money or I can’t get a ride are not acceptable reasons not to wrestle! If you want to wrestle the coaching staff, wrestling boosters and your teammates will see that you get the opportunity to wrestle, we are a brotherhood!)
What you need to do prior to the first day of practice on November
1. Get a sport physical! If you received your physical earlier in the year, you must fill out a recertification form. You will not be permitted to practice without completing the proper forms via the SportsWare website. Details can be found on the CYSD website under Athletic Physical info.
2. All wrestlers need to get Weight Certified; this determines the minimum weight at which you can wrestle. Weight certification takes place at O.S.S. on October 29th.
3. Register @ www.centralyorkwrestling.org “registration” tab. Select Jr. High.
4. Sign up for text alerts.
5. Sign up for emails.
6. Be academically eligible to participate! Study and do your homework!
7. Finally, Get in Shape! All are welcome to try out, but you must be in “good shape.” You should be running, doing push-ups and sit-ups daily! Cross training, work outs that combine strength building and cardio, are best. Be prepared, your opponent will be! Prior to the start of the season, try and meet these fitness goals:
30 Minute sustained run: Run/jog at your own pace, no walking.
40 Push-ups: Flat back, on your toes, chest within a fist of the floor.
50 Sit-ups: Arms crossed, legs bent, toes may be secured.
30 Squats: From standing position squat, jump and reach and repeat.
?? Pull-ups: AS MANY AS POSSIBLE!
These are goals and should be easily obtainable for someone intending on wrestling. The better condition you are in the more success you will have!
Wrestling is HARD!
It is Physically and Mentally Challenging.
Wrestling is not for everyone.
We are few in numbers for a reason.
You will get bumps, bruises and have sore muscles
but
serious injuries are rare.
Are you tough enough to be a Wrestler?
